The Flip Side of the Story

Okay ~ I feel a compulsion to tell the whole truth!

You may remember in yesterday's post,
when I stopped my car,
pulled off the road,
jumped a barrier,
and slunk ran across the prairie
trying to get a little closer
as I chased pronghorns.

Such gorgeous wide open space
in the slanting late afternoon sun!

Well, I need to show you
the flip side of the story.

Do a 180 from this:

And you get this:

I used to tell my third grade kiddos,
"Extinction is forever."

It's not just animals and plants
and other living things
that go extinct.

When natural habitat
is gobbled up by construction,
it is gone forever too.

  1. Oh, but it's so fun to gobble things up--like pickles. And cheese! Definitely don't forget the cheese. ;)

  3. The suburban sprawl along the front range of Colorado is terrifying! I just can't imagine where all of the people are coming from and how they will all be able to survive in this arid land.

    1. Dreaming, you have highlighted my #1 concern ~ water!!!!! I worked for Cherry Creek School District for 25 years, and one of the things it has to be is a good predictor of future growth. Time and time again I shook my head in disbelief at what its long range planning committee predicted. But what is more unbelievable is that the committee was right! It is scary! And sad! Take care!

    1. Hi Audrey! I think this century is going to make us or break us as a species. I keep hoping we'll wise up before it's too late. Meanwhile, I try to do what I can to mitigate my impact. I keep thinking if I do this one thing (like recycle an egg carton), and one million others do it, it will be a big thing. Have a great weekend with Alain and your beautiful girls!

Colorado is so beautiful, it is a shame that more wild areas are not preserved!

  6. Hello Fundy!
So many thanks for your sweet comment on my blog!
I haven't been a great blogger lately either, lack of time, not feeling like getting on the net!
I guess it happens to all of us one day or another!
Anyway, I can't agree more with you, once nature has been eradicated by man it is lost.
Extinction is for ever and that should be 'food for thought' to who ever governs this magnificent planet. Their families are involved too...
Poor Mother Earth... we spare her very little!
I have gone through your latest posts and I have seen lovely and interesting photos!
The late afternoon sun rays are always a marvel!
    Cheers, keep well!

    1. Hi Noushka! Thanks for your kind words about my photos! Coming from a magnificent photographer like you, they made my day! I think that you contribute so much to documenting the beauty of our natural world and the living things in it. We need passionate people to turn things around! As for blogging, each of us does what we can when we can ~ and I think other bloggers understand! Have a lovely weekend!

  7. "Extinction is forever." Truer words could not be spoken! It's sad to see so much of Mother Nature being destroyed. Wishing you a great weekend.

  8. I'm afraid the entire continent is going to be swallowed up, lock stock and barrel. Our province is heavily forested but daily you hear trucks zooming by heading for 'who knows where' and why ~~ super sad. That is why we go to our 3 beaches and park and veg out literally. I have always lived on the outside of things dipping my toes/self into city life and knowing full well, I'm not a city person. Life will be so different in 100 years and at the rate we are going well, things are going to be so different and so suburbanized/urbanized.

  9. Lucky you ~ to have ben able to live mostly on the outside of things! I'm semi on the edge here! But the city is catching up and spreading around me! I don't want to think about 100 years from now! I think it will be good, or it will be bad! Sometimes I wonder if humans will still be here. I keep hoping that with all our connectedness and growing technology we'll find our way through to a better way. We just need more wisdom! Have a good day!
